Course Description

This interactive course includes lectures and laboratories to teach participants the theory and method of tibial plateau leveling osteotomy. Participants will perform TPLOs on plastic bones and cadavers using state of the art equipment and implants. Participants will use locking plate technology to simplify, increase precision and reduce complications of the procedure. Participants should have a basic knowledge of the anatomy and surgical approach to the stifle and principles of bone plate application. The Principles of Fracture Repair Course is a prerequisite. Postoperative radiographs will be taken to assess the participant’s repair technique. Postoperative management will also be discussed.

Instructors

Brian Beale, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Brian Beale attended the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Beale completed a 3-year residency in small animal surgery and joined the faculty there as an assistant professor from 1990-1992. Beale became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1991 and joined Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in 1992.

Beale has a special interest in arthroscopy, minimally-invasive surgery, fracture repair, joint replacement, treatment of arthritis, and pain management. He has many publications, including textbooks, textbook chapters, and scientific articles. Beale is a passionate teacher and frequently lectures and teaches wet-labs around the world.

Beale is a past-president of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society, past-president of the Gulf Coast Veterinary Foundation and active in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He has been a board member for American Humane since 2017. Beale was awarded the Specialty Veterinarian of the Year Award by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association in 2010. Beaele became an ACVS Founding Fellow of Minimally-Invasive Orthopedic Surgery in 2018. 

He currently is the Head of Education, Training and Research for Compassion First Pet Hospitals and board member and surgeon for Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, TX.

Caleb Hudson, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Caleb Hudson is a native of Louisiana and attended veterinary school at the University of Missouri. After receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2007, Hudson moved to Gainesville, Fla. to complete a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Florida. Hudson stayed at the University of Florida to complete a small animal surgery residency and a masters program. After completing his residency, Hudson spent a year as faculty at the University of Florida.

In 2013, he moved to Houston, TX and joined Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, where he is currently employed as a surgeon. Special interests include total joint replacement and minimally invasive surgery. In his free time, Hudson enjoys rock climbing and distance running.
