Course Description

Lectures cover an introduction to the basic instrumentation, technique, diagnostic and surgical capabilities of laparoscopy. Eight hours of laboratory time using models and live animals will allow participants to learn how to perform organ biopsies, gastropexy and ovariectomy. This course is intended for those having minimal or no experience with laparoscopy. All lectures, equipment handling, and assisting in the laboratory are included in the registration fee. This course is open to veterinary technicians to attend with their veterinarian enrolled in the course. Click here to register as a veterinarian.

Lead Instructors

Eric Monnet, DVM, PhD

Dr. Eric Monnet graduated from veterinary school in Maisons Alfort, France in 1985. He worked for four years in a Paris private practice performing small animal medicine and surgery. In 1994, Monnet completed a small animal surgery residency at Colorado State University and concurrently finished a Master of Sciences degree. In 1997, Monnet received his PhD in Clinical Sciences studying cardiac efficiency in dogs. In 2003, he became a fellow of the American Heart Association.

Monnet is currently a professor in small animal surgery (soft tissue) at Colorado State University. He has authored more than 100 articles and 25 chapters in various surgical textbooks. Monnet was the founding president in 2001-2003 of the Society for Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery and in 2002-2004 of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society. He is the editor of the textbook Disease Mechanisms in Small Animal Surgery (3rd edition). He is also the editor of the textbook Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery (1st edition).

David C. Twedt, DVM, DACVIM

Dr. David C. Twedt is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University and Associate Director of Continuing Education in the Translational Medicine Institute.

Twedt is past President of the ACVIM and Comparative Gastroenterology Society. Publication and research interests include liver disease, gastrointestinal disease and endoscopy. He has also been the recipient of a number of teaching and research awards including the Veterinary Endoscopy Society Pioneer in Endoscopy Award. Twedt is the editor of several textbooks including Current Veterinary Therapy.
