RACE Approved: 16 CEU hours (Program 833-30797)
This 2-day introductory GI endoscopy course will include 7 hours of lectures covering indications, basic technique, and disorders diagnosed via endoscopy and a total of 9 hours of laboratory time for key hands-on experience. Day one's laboratory will use GI models and fresh cadavers to learn basic endoscopic manipulation, biopsy techniques, foreign body removal, and PEG tube placement. Day two's laboratory will involve live dogs performing basic upper and lower GI endoscopy to perfect manipulation skills.
There will be 3 participants per dog and each person will have the opportunity to endoscope two or more different animals during the laboratory. Video recordings are saved at each table for class review in wrap up sessions and also for each participant to take their endoscopy videos home for future review.
Bring your technician; they can attend lectures and individual training on endoscopic instrumentation and set up, biopsy management and assist during the laboratory. This course is open to veterinary technicians to attend with their veterinarian enrolled in the course. Included are lectures, equipment handling and assisting in the laboratory.
Michael Leib, DVM, DACVIM
Dr. Leib graduated from the University of Georgia and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Colorado State University. He then served on the faculty at Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech where he was C.R. Roberts Professor of Small Animal Medicine until retiring in 1972.
Leib is now Emeritus Professor and Diplomate of ACVIM. Leib’s clinical and research interests are in gastroenterology and endoscopy. He as published extensively and has lectured Nationally and Internationally. Leib is also the recipient of many teaching awards.
David C. Twedt, DVM, DACVIM
Dr. David C. Twedt is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University and Associate Director of Continuing Education in the Translational Medicine Institute.
Twedt is past President of the ACVIM and Comparative Gastroenterology Society. Twedt's publication and research interests include liver disease, gastrointestinal disease, and endoscopy. He is a recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, including the Veterinary Endoscopy Society Pioneer in Endoscopy Award. Twedt serves as an editor on several textbooks including Current Veterinary Therapy.
