Course Description

A two-day course includes lectures in the morning and hours of hands-on laboratories each afternoon involving:

  • Preparation of semen for freezing

  • Techniques for freezing canine semen

  • Proper handling, storage and thawing procedures

  • Post-thawing evaluation of semen

  • Semen storage handling and requirements. 

Laboratory time gives participants a chance to develop semen handling, freezing, thawing and evaluation skills that will equip them with the knowledge and confidence to start practicing semen collections for freezing in their own clinical setting.

Lead Instructor: Fiona Hollinshead BVSc (Hons), PhD, DACT

Dr. Fiona Hollinshead BVSc (Hons), MACVSc, PhD, DACT

Dr. Fiona Hollinshead graduated from The University of Sydney, Australia in 1996 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honors) and in 2004 with a PhD in sperm sexing and assisted reproductive technologies. Fiona completed a clinical residency in Theriogenology at Cornell University in 2006 and in the same year became a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and a Registered Specialist in Small Animal Veterinary Reproduction with the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council. Fiona has a strong interest in canine semen biology and reproductive technologies as well as clinical research, teaching and clinical service. For the past 12 years Fiona managed a rapidly growing small animal reproduction referral practice in New Zealand called “Glenbred” that was initially founded by Dr Marion Wilson who originally developed the TCI technique in bitches. During this time Fiona was the reproductive consultant to the New Zealand Guide Dogs, MPI Detector Dogs and the New Zealand Police and detector dog breeding units, which involved the production of over 350 puppies per year with the majority of breeding performed with frozen semen imported from other international agencies. Dr Hollinshead has published 7 book chapters in the field of small animal reproduction and over 55 scientific and clinical refereed publications in small animal reproduction and artificial assisted technologies. Dr Hollinshead is passionate about providing excellent continuing education to veterinarians and offering the very best clinical service and advice to pet owners and breeders. Her goal is to provide pertinent continuing education to veterinarians and owners and conduct novel and clinically relevant research.

Melinda Meyers 

Melinda Meyers is a research associate with over 10 years of experience in the biomedical and biotechnology field. She received a B.S. from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and an M.S. with a focus on equine biotechnology, flow cytometry, and genetic preservation from Colorado State University (CSU). Her work contributions have led to the commercialization of sex-sorted bull semen, the production of equine, canine, and ovine sexed offspring, as well as the development of methods for sex-sorting a variety of wildlife species. She has contributed in producing the world's first sex-selected puppies.  Additionally, she has facilitated training in gamete and in particular, sperm, and cryopreservation techniques for undergraduates, graduates, veterinary students, and veterinarians nationally and internationally over the past 10 years. She has recently contributed to a variety of stem-cell investigations to provide therapies for companion animal species. She has also facilitated the development of multiple novel reproductive techniques that have been implemented nationally and globally. She is looking forward to continuing to participate in exciting research advancements being made at CSU’s Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory and teaching DVM’s techniques for the optimal freezing of canine semen.

  •        Refunds are available for cancellations made 35 days prior to the beginning of the course. Cancellations less than 35 days before a course are nonrefundable but may be partially transferrable to a future course.
